What is Learning Sectors?
Learning Sectors is the Formula 1® programme aimed at schools around the world, currently implemented by the British Council.
Learning Sectors, is supported by Formula 1® and delivered by the British Council. Using Formula 1’s global platform, and the world-class engineering and innovation within motorsport, the programme will motivate children aged 7-16 years old in Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa, Spain and the UK to engage with the prospect of STEM careers, and to further develop communication and oracy-based skills inspired by the range of STEM and communications-based careers at Formula 1.
Building on our exciting first year that reached over 150,000 young people across more than 700 schools worldwide, the programme brings schools together to tackle real-world STEM challenges and develop real-world communication skills!
Communicating science and engineering is as important as understanding it and through its world-class broadcasting platform, Formula 1 shows how clear, confident communication brings STEM to life for audiences worldwide.
For this year, Learning Sectors includes a new, exciting, enhanced focus on oracy and communication skills, supporting current school priorities around developing pupils’ ability to collaborate effectively and communicate with confidence.
The programme aims to be inclusive of all young people and especially girls and children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Through a blend of digital engagement and face-to-face events, the programme will inspire and encourage young people to develop their soft-skills, intercultural awareness, oracy& communication skills, and build aspirations for future careers in STEM, media and broadcasting as inspired by Formula 1.
During the programme, schools will identify an issue in their community and work within teams to come up with a solution, using STEM skills to tackle a real-world challenge and make a positive change.
- Engage learners through using STEM skills for practical challenge
- Enhance their ability to speak about science and tech with confidence
- Broaden their horizons through working with others
- Inspire students with real examples of STEM in action from Formula 1!

Implementation of the programme in Mexico
On July 3, an operational alliance agreement was signed with the Ministry of Public Education of the State of Hidalgo to benefit 200 high schools across various municipalities, coordinated through the Undersecretariat of Higher and Upper Secondary Education (SEMSyS). This partnership aims to equip Hidalgo's youth with key soft skills to help them thrive in global contexts.
Aligned with the New Mexican Educational Model (Nueva Escuela Mexicana), the program emphasizes project-based learning, problem-solving, critical thinking, collaborative teamwork, and applying knowledge to real-world challenges.
Rather than viewing Formula 1® strictly as a sport, this initiative leverages its high-tech, innovative nature to drive competitive educational development aligned with state priorities. Through this framework, students strengthen core competencies across all learning fields, including communication, argumentation, project presentation, and collaboration.
