At the British Council, we believe that the development and learning of the English language and its trends are not static; instead, they are living concomitants that change the more they are practised.
That's why, in May 2025, the fourth British Council New Directions in Language Assessment Latin America will be held in Mexico City with a two-day conference with its main theme:
Meeting the moment: diverse language assessment needs in Latin America
The conference will have three sub-themes:
- Accommodating a diverse range of test-takers.
- Responding to diverse contexts
- Embracing a diverse range of approaches to assessment
The conference provides perspectives and insight on trends and approaches in English language assessment at a local, regional, and international level.
As part of the New Directions conference, we want t to share the invite to the following webinar with Ceibal in English from Uruguay:
From an assessment need to an AI-assisted solution
Abstract:
This session will present the core mission of CEI and their experience on how the Online Speaking test initiative fits into Uruguay’s broader educational landscape. We will share key aspects of the approach that CEI has taken to develop the Online Speaking test, highlighting how it has not only addressed the need for large-scale assessment, but also created opportunities for professional development and contributed to the growth of a local knowledge base in English language testing.
Furthermore, we will explore CEI’s ongoing work in designing an AI-assisted solution for rating the audios of the Online Speaking Test. We will provide insights into the approach being implemented, share key challenges encountered during its development, and invite the audience to discuss innovative solutions to these challenges.
